A term that refers generically to several different types of computer data storage devices. Originally, this was a device that reads and writes information to and from a removable magnetic storage medium, known as diskettes. Disk drives also include hard disk drives, removable USB Flash drives and other devices capable of a much larger data storage capacity than diskettes. A disk drive's storage medium is used to store directories and files, made accessible by the computer's operating system.
